Poem by John Greenleaf Whittier

No longer forward nor behind
I look in hope or fear;
But, grateful, take the good I find,
The best of now and here.
All as God wills, who wisely heeds
To give or to withhold,
And knoweth more lf all my needs
Than all my prayers have told.

Poem by Unknown - On Visiting a King

If you and I should visit
A king some happy day.
We would be quiet in His house
We would not romp and play.

We would not tear or soil His books
Nor scratch his chairs and walls,
We would not throw down peanut hulls
Or paper in the halls.

The Lord’s house is a King’s house.
The King is always there,
He listens to the preacher
He joins each song and prayer.

Then let us treat the Lord’s house
As owned by heaven’s King;
At home we romp and play
But here we pray and sing.

Quote by George Matheson

Am I to thank God for everything?  Am I to thank Him for bereavement, for pain, for poverty, for toil ? . . . Be still, my soul; thou hast misread the message. It is not to give thanks for everything, but to give thanks in everything.

Anecdote from D.L. Moody - Stop Trying

I remember a lady in the north of England who became quite angry when I made this statement: “None in this congregation will be saved until they stop trying to save themselves.”
Down she came from the gallery and said to me: “You have made be perfectly miserable. Why, I always thought that if I kept on trying, God would save me at some time; and now you tell me to stop trying. What am I to do?”
“Why, let the Lord save you.”
