From the Book: None of These Diseases. S. I. McMillen, M.D.

WHAT IS DEATH?

            To prevent the minor and major diseases resulting from the inundating grief over a loved one’s death, the Bible provides the greatest possible barricade. The eleventh chapter of John not only gives clear teaching on this matter but also presents public and highly dramatic proof of the veracity of the assertions made. In the village of Bethany , lived Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. When Lazarus became sick, word was sent to Jesus for help. But Jesus purposely delayed His going because He wanted to teach the world the transitory character of the state we call death. While Jesus started His trip to Bethany , He told His disciples that He was going to raise Lazarus out of his sleep.

            The disciples thought it was rather ridiculous to make a hazardous journey to wake a sick man out of sleep. Then Jesus talked to them in the only language that they in their immaturity could understand: “Lazarus is dead.”

            Arriving in Bethany , Jesus revealed to a sister mourning for her dead brother another important aspect of the state that we erroneously call death:” . . . the believer in Me will live even when he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?”

            How could anybody believe that Christians never really die --- that they are only asleep? Jesus knew that even His disciples and the others at Bethany would not believe such assertions without proof. A million empty human words never would have convinced anybody, but three words from the Master did: “Lazarus, come forth.” Out came Lazarus, a living proof that for the Christians there is no horrible existence that we associate with the word death. It is only a sleep that requires His call to awaken us. Quite understandably, Christians changed the names of their graveyards to sleeping chambers (our English word “cemetery” comes from the Greek Koimeterion, which means “a sleeping chamber.”)

            When Jesus told those who were mourning over the dead body of Jairus’s daughter, “. . . . she is not dead, but sleepeth,” they ridiculed Him with scornful epithets. Again He wanted to prove false the utterly hopeless view we have about the state we call death. So He merely took the cold and motionless girl by the hand and awakened her from the state the He calls sleep.

Poem by Eugene L. Clark - "Nothing is Impossible"

I read in Bible the promise of God,
That nothing for Him is too hard.
Impossible things He had promised to do
If we faithfully trust in His Word.

The word of the Lord is an anchor secure
When winds of uncertainty blow;
Though man in his weakness may falter and fail,
His Word will not fail us we know.

“All things are possible,” this is His Word
Receive it, it’s written for you.
Believe in His promises; God cannot fail;
For what He has said He will do.

Creator of all things, with infinite pow’r,
He spoke --- they appeared by His mouth,
Impossible things are not know unto Him.
He made us, He ruleth the earth.

Nothing is impossible when you put your trust in God;
Nothing is impossible when you’re trusting in His Word.
Hearken to the voice of God to thee;
“Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Then put your trust in God alone and rest upon His Word;
For everything, oh everything, yes everything is possible with God.

Poem by Unknown - "Keep on Walking, Pilgrim"

Don’t be weary. Pilgrim,
While trav’ling here below,
For there’s a home awaiting,
The Bible tells me so.

Don’t be hungry, Pilgrim,
Just bring your empty bowl;
There’s manna in the Bible
To satisfy your soul.

Don’t be thirsty, Pilgrim,
Just bring your cup to Him;
And God the Holy Spirit
Will fill it to the brim.

Don’t be silent, Pilgrim,
While waiting for your King;
Let praises rise to meet Him,
Lift up your voice and sing.

Keep on walking, faithful Pilgrim.
The journey’s leading home.

Poem by Eugene L. Clark - "The Best is Yet to Come"

So much of good has come my way
Since first I found the Lord that day;
But even so, I still can say
That the best is yet to come.

I felt the surge of joy within,
When Jesus took away my sin;
In Him the heavenly joys begin,
But the best is yet to come.

I know the peace that Jesus gives,
Within my heart contentment lives;
A precious gift of God it is,
But the best is yet to come.

Oh, the best is yet to come,
Yes, the best is yet to come;
On heaven’s shore there’ll be much more;
Yes, the best is yet to come.

Anecdote by Unknown - Covered

Many years ago a British subject in Mexico was falsely accused of a crime, and sentenced to death.

The morning of the day for the execution arrived, the innocent man was led out to meet his death. But, just as the fatal short was about to be fired, up rushed the British ambassador carrying the British flag.  Quickly to the side of the condemned man he went, and wrapped about him the flag, crying to the executioner as he did so, “Fire, if you dare!”

At about that very time, the American ambassador appeared on the scene carrying the flag of the United States .  Like the British ambassador, he rushed to the side of the condemned man and covered him with the Stars and Stripes. Then he too cried, “Fire if you dare!”

The life of the condemned man was spared. The executioner dared not fire on such a covering.

Today, the sinner stands before God CONDEMNED.     Three verses In Scripture complete this story.

John 3:18
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Romans 3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

God provides the covering and we see that in Isaiah 61:10

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels

Poem by Eugene L. Clark - "In Everything Give Thanks"

Fear not the raging storm;
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform.

In everything give thanks;
\Whatever be the test;
For in God’s providence,
He sends us what is best.

In everything give thanks;
God watches day and night,
Protecting, caring for His own
Their good is His delight.

In everything give thanks,
God lives and reigns supreme
And now prepares a home for us
Beyond our fondest dream.

In everything give thanks;
In gratitude to Him
Lift up your voice! Give thanks! Rejoice!
In everything give thanks.

Poem by Grace E. Troy - "Looking Unto Him"

Ps 34:5
They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

If you would be discouraged
Then take a look within---
You’ll find naught there of beauty
Thy best is marred by sin.

If you would be discouraged
About the cares of life
Then take a look around you
You’ll find naught there but strife.

If you your heart would lighten,
Look up to God above
And every cloud will brighten
If you but trust His love.

You’ll find it makes a difference
Which way you look, I say.
So listen when I tell you
Keep looking up today.

Poem by Grace E. Troy - "My God, My Need"

MY GOD SHALL SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED
ACCORDING TO HIS RICHES IN GLORY
BY CHRIST JESUS
Phil. 4:19

“My God” --- the One who made the world.
Who formed me from the dust,
“My God”--- whose grace is infinite,
Him surely I can trust.

“My need” --- which seems so great to me.
The reaching mountains high,
Yes --- all my need the great or small,
He pledges to supply.

“His riches” --- such a measure full,
From which my need to meet,
In Glory now --- such riches His ---
For every need complete!

“By Jesus Christ” my gracious Lord,
What stronger pledge could be?
For He Who died my soul to save
Will surely care for me.
